Dr. Jan Christopher Palmowski:

‚Britain and the EU: The Constitution of a European Identity‘

Constitutions are closely linked to popular identities. If a European constitution does express a European identity, how would that identity relate to national identities? This question is crucial for the development of the EU, and it is also crucial for the UK’s position within it. In this context, we must begin by analysing more precisely what we mean when we talk about identities and to define what popular identities mean for the United Kingdom, both for the country as a whole and for its composite nationalities. This sheds light on why the question of a European identity is a particularly acute concern for the United Kingdom. Within the European Union, a European identity has principally been defined in ways that undermine British conceptions of identity. For this reason, a European constitution would be particularly threatening to the national consensus that defines the cohesion of the United Kingdom.

Jan Christopher Palmowski was born in Wales. A British and German national, he obtained a First-class Honours degree in History and Economics from the University of York before continuing his studies at the University of Oxford in 1991, which he completed with a DPhil in Modern History. In 1999, he became Lecturer in European Studies at King’s College, London, and in the following year he was also appointed to become the co-Director of the Centre for Twentieth-Century Studies in King’s College. Dr. Palmowski has published widely on German and British history between 1850 and the present. His current work concentrates on the question of popular identities and the European Union.
