Julian Spalding:
„What’s gone wrong with Modern Art?“

To those outside the art world, a gap has opened between the public and modern art. Insiders, however, think modern art is no more shocking than it has always been, and the public will understand and appreciate it all in good time. But Julian Spalding is one art expert who believes that visual judgment, which is crucial for the perception of real art has been thrown out of the window and now anything goes. The reasons for this are complex – ranging from a misunderstanding of the career of Van Gogh to the antagonism of Feminists, from the problems of the art market to the egos of curators. Julian Spalding will look into all these aspects and point a way forward to a time when artists again will seek to create images that are both popular and profound.

Julian Spalding was born in London in 1947 and studied Fine Art and Art History at the University of Nottingham. He became the director of art galleries and museums for the cities of Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow. He established four new award-winning museums: the Ruskin Gallery, the St Mungo Museum of Religious Art and Life, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Open Museum. As Master of the Guild of St George, an educational charity established by John Ruskin, he created in 2000 a nationwide Campaign for Drawing to raise awareness of the value of drawing in everyday life and throughout education. He spelt out his vision for museums in numerous publications. He writes, broadcasts and advises on museum and gallery development internationally. He lives in Edinburgh.
