Our guest speaker, Professor Geraint H. Jenkins is a historian. In 1993 he was appointed Director of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, a research centre located next to the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. Previously he was Head of the Department of Welsh History at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Professor Jenkins is author and editor in a variety of fields, he has published more than 30 books to his name. As well as directing research at the Centre, he is also Chairman and Research Director of the University of Wales Board of Celtic Studies. He has a wife, three daughters and three cats, and he enjoys music, sport and gardening.

This lecture focuses on the most intriguing figure in the cultural history of Wales, a stonemason called Edward Williams, who styled himself „Iolo Morganwg“ (Edward of Glamorgan) or, more strikingly, A „Rattleskull Genius“. This endlessly fascinating man – probably the best read man in Wales during his lifetime (1747-1826) – restored to the Welsh their self-esteem by giving them a history and a literature which he, as a unique forger, had invented. He also dreamed of a Wales which had its own National Library, College and Folk Museum, its own national identity and a flourishing language and literature. His motto was ‚Y Gwir yn erbyn y Byd‘ (Truth against the World) and this lecture will celebrate his diverse interests and his career as one of the makers of modern Wales.
